Living in Cypress, Texas

Cypress is a large suburban area in northwest Harris County, about 25 miles from downtown Houston along the US 290 corridor. It offers a wide mix of homes, from established 1980s and 1990s neighborhoods to some of the region's best-known master-planned communities, including Bridgeland and Towne Lake.

Cypress is not an incorporated city. It is an unincorporated community inside Houston's extraterritorial jurisdiction, so there is no Cypress city government. Harris County provides most services, and many neighborhoods rely on municipal utility districts (MUDs), which can affect property tax rates. The homes on this page are those with a Cypress mailing address.

A Little Cypress History

People have lived along Cypress Creek for thousands of years; archaeologists have dated finds at the nearby Dimond Knoll site to around 7500 BC. The modern community grew up as a stop on the Houston and Texas Central Railroad, and the old town center at Spring Cypress Road and Hempstead Highway was known as Cypress Top. You can visit restored buildings from that era at Cypress Top Historic Park. The area stayed largely rural until large-scale suburban development began in the late 20th century.

Cy-Fair ISD Schools

Most of Cypress is served by Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, one of the largest school districts in Texas. With the area growing quickly, attendance zones change as new campuses open, so confirm a home's school assignment with the district's boundary tool before you buy.
