Living in Katy, Texas

Katy sits about 30 miles west of downtown Houston where Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties meet. It started as a small rice-farming and railroad town and has grown into one of the most in-demand suburban areas in the Houston region, with everything from established neighborhoods to brand-new master-planned communities.

Keep in mind that "Katy" means two things. The City of Katy is a small, historic town of roughly 22,000 people (2020 Census). "Greater Katy" is the much larger area of communities with a Katy mailing address, including Cinco Ranch, Elyson, Cane Island, Sunterra and many more, most of which are outside the city limits. The homes on this page include both.

A Little Katy History

The area was first settled as Cane Island, named for the creek that runs through it. The town of Katy was platted in 1895 along the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT, or "K-T") Railroad, which most likely gave the town its name, and a post office opened in 1896. Rice became the main crop, and Katy is home to the first concrete rice dryers built in Texas. The Katy gas field brought more growth, and the City of Katy incorporated in 1945. You can still explore that history in Old Towne Katy, at Katy Heritage Park, and at the Katy Rice Harvest Festival each October.

Katy ISD Schools

Most of the Katy area is served by Katy Independent School District, which was formed in 1918 and is a major reason many families choose Katy. Some addresses on the edges of the area fall into neighboring districts, so always confirm a home's school assignment with the district's boundary tool before you buy.
